About United Rentals, Inc.

United Rentals, Inc., incorporated on July 20, 1998, is a holding company. The Company is an equipment rental company, which operates throughout the United States and Canada. It operates through two segments: general rentals, and trench, power and pump. The general rentals segment includes the rental of construction, aerial, industrial and homeowner equipment and related services and activities. The trench, power and pump segment includes the rental of specialty construction products and related services. As of October 17, 2018, the Company had an integrated network of 1075 rental locations in North America and 11 in Europe. The Company conducts its operations through its subsidiaries, NES Rentals Holdings II, Inc., United Rentals (North America), Inc. (URNA) and subsidiaries of URNA.

The Company's products and services include equipment rental, sales of rental equipment, sales of new equipment, contractor supplies sales, and others. As of December 31, 2016, the Company offered approximately 3,200 classes of equipment on an hourly, daily, weekly or monthly basis. The Company offers various types of equipment, including general construction and industrial equipment; aerial work platforms; trench safety equipment; power and heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment; pumps, and general tools and light equipment. It sells used rental equipment and invests in new equipment. It also sells used equipment in response to customer demand for the equipment.

The Company sells used equipment through its national and export sales forces. The Company also sells used equipment through its Website, including an online database of used equipment available for sale. It sells equipment, including aerial lifts, reach forklifts, telehandlers, compressors and generators from various equipment manufacturers. The Company sells a range of contractor supplies, including construction consumables, tools, small equipment and safety supplies. The Company offers repair and maintenance services, and sells parts for equipment that is owned by its customers.

General rentals

The Company's general rentals segment includes the rental of general construction and industrial equipment, such as backhoes, skid-steer loaders, forklifts, earthmoving equipment and material handling equipment; aerial work platforms, such as boom lifts and scissor lifts, and general tools and light equipment, such as pressure washers, water pumps and power tools. The general rentals segment serves customers, including construction and industrial companies, manufacturers, utilities, municipalities and homeowners. As of December 31, 2016, the general rentals segment consisted of nine geographic regions, including Industrial (which served the geographic Gulf region and had an industrial presence), Mid-Atlantic, Midwest, Northeast, Pacific West, South-Central, South, Southeast and Western Canada.

Trench, power and pump

The trench, power and pump segment consists of the Trench Safety region, which rents trench safety equipment, such as trench shields, aluminum hydraulic shoring systems, slide rails, crossing plates, construction lasers and line testing equipment for underground work; the Power and HVAC region, which rents power and HVAC equipment, such as portable diesel generators, electrical distribution equipment and temperature control equipment, including heating and cooling equipment, and the Pump Solutions region, which rents pumps primarily used by energy and petrochemical customers. The trench, power and pump segment serves construction companies involved in infrastructure projects, municipalities and industrial companies.
